Badger Exam Scale Score Ranges

The Badger Exam was administered statewide to Wisconsin students in grades 3-8 in the spring of the 2014-15 school year. The Badger Exam assessed students’ academic performance in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics against Wisconsin’s academic standards. Wisconsin has established cut scores to delineate each performance level, such that they are aligned to the college and career readiness benchmarks and expectations found in our rigorous academic standards.

Establishing statewide expectations for proficiency (cut scores) is necessary to fulfill important accountability reporting requirements. These performance level cut scores were determined through a standard setting process that included a number of Wisconsin educators, representatives from higher education and stakeholders with expertise in ELA and mathematics. The stakeholders reviewed cut score recommendations provided by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium. These were approved by the Department of Public Instruction for use in Wisconsin for the 2014-15 administration of the Badger Exam.

Please note that DPI anticipates re-evaluating the cut scores and performance levels in 2015-16 when data from the Forward Exam is available, likely Summer 2016. A similar stakeholder process will be used.
