Wisconsin Induction Model - Promising Programs

The Wisconsin Quality Educator Initiative PI 34 requires all school districts to provide a support system for initial educators who complete educator preparation programs after August 2004. The support system must include: ongoing orientation; support seminars; a qualified mentor for each initial educator who has been trained to provide input into the confidential formative assessment of initial educators; and an administrator who has been trained in the Professional Development Plan team process.

In June 2007, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and Great Lakes West Comprehensive Assistance Center brought together stakeholders to review survey results from initial educators and mentors about induction, to review research, and to plan for improvements. As a result of the seminar, stakeholders recommended that the department develop an induction model and highlight some promising induction programs.

The Wisconsin Induction Model MS Word document encompasses the requirements in PI 34. The National Commission on Teaching and America's Future (NCTAF) prepared the Systematic Teacher Induction and the Evolution of 21st Century Learning Communities model, to show a progression of induction over the years. The department utilized this model for comparison purposes and to assist districts to learn about induction.

While many districts in the state have implemented all the components of PI 34 and are promising programs, the department selected thirteen school districts to highlight as Wisconsin Induction Model - Promising Programs. Collectively they represent small, medium, and large student enrollment districts, and geographically they represent all of the CESA districts in the state. Some have even gone beyond promising programs towards 21st century learning. Contact them to learn about their promising programs.
