Six semester credits of undergraduate or graduate level courses taken at a baccalaureate or graduate degree-granting college/university which is accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Dept. of Education are acceptable for renewal of a professional educator license (program completed prior to September 1, 2004). For colleges and universities operating on a quarter system, 1 quarter credit equals 2/3 semester credit; therefore 9 quarter credits are equivalent to 6 semester credits.
Verify a college's accreditation on the DOE Office of Postsecondary Institutions website. Credits from 2-year UW System campuses are accepted. Wisconsin Technical College System Schools are not baccalaureate degree granting institutions; therefore, credits from these institutions are not accepted unless acceptable for transfer to a four-year accredited institution.
Course work must be directly and substantively related to the area of one or more of the licenses you hold, or to your professional competence. Independent study, correspondence, or internet courses offered for semester credit through the institutions described above are acceptable. Prior DPI approval is not required for credits earned at accredited Wisconsin colleges/universities or at out-of-state baccalaureate or graduate degree-granting institutions accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (either on-campus courses or off-campus courses offered in Wisconsin locations).
Submit original transcripts or grade reports documenting successful completion of coursework with your license renewal application. (Do not use highlighter to indicate courses on your transcript as it makes the information unreadable on DPI's imaging system.)
On-Line Course Work
Course work that is completed on-line will be accepted for renewal of a Wisconsin educator's license if the following criteria are met. The course work must:
- be offered for semester credit through a regionally-accredited four-year degree-granting college or university.
- be taken for semester credit and can either be graduate or undercgraduate credit.
- be completed in the five years preceding the new July 1st license starting date. (e.g. If the new license will start July 1, 2009, credits must be completed between 7/1/2004 and 6/30/2009.)
- be directly and substantively related to one or more of the licenses currently held by the applicant and/or enhance professional competence (e.g. adding another license area).
When the license is renewed, original transcripts must be provided that verify completion of the course work along with a completed PI-1602-5R application form and the $100 processing fee. Grade reports and transcripts printed via the internet will be accepted if the following information is printed on it:
- Student Name
- College Name
- Course Title and Course Number
- Semester/Quarter that Course was Completed
- Credits Earned
- Grade (including pass/fail or similar designation to determine if course was completed)
