PDP Writing Workshop Design

Information regarding promising and emergent practices in the areas of training components, activities, resources, training design and trainer feedback is included in this section on PDP writing workshops. This information has been provided by professionals around the state who have designed and facilitated this type of workshop.

The items in each area are listed in no particular order.

Workshop Components:

  • Overview of PI 34 and Wisconsin Educator Standards
  • Connecting professional growth with improved student learning - building a rationale for the PDP
  • Examination of all PDP components and the PDP process
  • Writing a measurable goal and connecting the goals to activities and assessment
  • Examining various types of goals, forms of evidence and potential activities
  • Process of self-reflection and analysis of professional practice
  • Assessment and evaluation of data relative to student learning
  • Examining high quality PDPs and comparing them to low quality PDPs
  • Understanding the importance of the collaborative process
  • Finding appropriate resources for the PDP - websites, literature, etc.

Sample of Workshop Activities:

  • Use self-reflection processes and have participants analyze their strengths using the Wisconsin Educator Standards. From this, participants can begin the process of writing PDP goals based on their own self-reflection with the standards
  • Discuss and analyze the entire process of self-reflection and how daily self-reflection can be used in developing a PDP
  • Demonstrate and discuss the entire process of writing a meaningful and manageable goal
  • Review specific PDP plans that vary in quality and discuss how each plan meets the standards of a quality PDP plan
  • Examine various types of assessment and the data that is gathered with each assessment. Discuss how this data reveals gprofessional growth and an effect upon student achievement
  • Discuss and analyze how an educator's professional growth will result in improved learning in his/her classroom

Resources:

The primary resources provided by the DPI for writing a PDP are listed below. All items are available on the PDP Page under DPI Resources.

  • PDP Educator Toolkit
  • PDP Initial Educator Tool Kit
  • PDP Team Toolkit
  • Self Reflection Tools for PDP
  • PDP Forms

Training Design:

Listed below are the most commonly used workshop designs in terms of time scheduled for the workshop. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction does not endorse one particular format for training.

  • One full day
  • Monthly - 1.5 hour sessions throughout the school year
  • One day workshop and then two 3 hour sessions scheduled at least a week apart from each other
  • Friday evening and all day on Saturday
  • Two full days with time scheduled between each day so participants have time to reflect and write

Trainer Feedback:

Comments or suggestions made by people who have facilitated PDP training.

  • "Mentors need to be involved in PDP writing workshops or the PDP team training so they can assist the Initial Educators with the PDP process."
  • "It is very important to clarify the link between professional growth and improved student learning."
  • "To be effective, a PDP writing workshop must be at least one full day."
  • "Work to break the process down into manageable steps. Otherwise the Initial Educator will be overwhelmed with the process."
  • "If possible, provide time between sessions (at least one week) to allow for time for participants to reflect on and digest information."
  • "The standard that seems to be chosen most often by Initial Educators for their PDP is differentiation - number three. Be prepared to work with that standard."
  • "A significant part of training must be for the participants to actually do some writing so they can receive direct assistance as they go through the process of writing their PDP."
