Master Educator License Information

The Master Educator License is a voluntary ten year license. There are two pathways to the Master Educator License in the state of Wisconsin: the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and the Wisconsin Master Educator Assessment Process (WMEAP).

  • The NBPTS route allows teachers to participate in a rigorous assessment process and receive NBPTS Certification. This option is available to teachers in most subject areas and to and school counselors. Individuals who become a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) may then apply and qualify for a ten year license as a Wisconsin Master Educator.
  • The WMEAP route is targeted toward administrators, pupil services personnel, and teachers licensed in subjects not available through NBPTS. Educators are allowed up to two years to complete a portfolio that is then assessed by DPI-trained assessors. Educators who demonstrate an advanced level of proficiency on challenging and rigorous portfolio entries built on the framework of the Wisconsin Standards can obtain the Master Educator license.
