Educators are licensed in Wisconsin based on completion of a state-approved educator preparation program. For applicants who completed a comparable, approved educator preparation program in another state, a license with stipulations may be issued after submission of a PI-1602-OS application. Typically, an applicant receives a five-year license with minor course work stipulations or deficiencies that are identified with an accompanying letter. The licensee should retain this stipulation letter. The educator must satisfy all remaining stipulations during the 5-year license period to obtain a regular, Professional Educator License (without stipulations) at the next renewal.
License Renewal for Licensees holding a License with Stipulations:
The license with stipulations is a non-renewable license that requires holders to complete, by the expiration date of the license, all identified stipulations and the required professional growth requirement (e.g. the Professional Development Plan or six semester credits depending on the license type). As early as January of the year the license expires, applicants submit a PI-1602-STP Stipulation Removal license application with verification that they have completed all identified stipulations, the professional growth requirement, and experience for advancement, if applicable.
RESOURCES FAQs - License Stipulations
Identified deficiencies/stipulations may be completed at any approved program; however some University of Wisconsin campuses and other organizations have created programs specifically tailored to the needs of licensees with deficiencies/stipulations.
