Educator License Application Fees

FEE POLICY: Applications for licensure require the appropriate application form and a separate fee for each application form processed (e.g. initial in-state, 5-year renewal, emergency, etc.). A standard renewal form, PI-1602-5R allows you to renew all licenses held at the same time for $100. To add a new license earned at a Wisconsin institution requires a PI-1602-IS form (or PI-1602-AD for administrative or reading) and $100. To add a new license earned at a non-Wisconsin institution requires a PI-1602-OS form and $150. An emergency license or permit requires a PI-1602-EL form and a $100 fee for each year.

Examples of Fee Policy:

Example 1: To renew a 5-year teacher license and also apply for an emergency license, use two separate application forms (PI-1602-5R and PI-1602-EL) and pay the $100 processing fee for each license (fee total is $200).

Example 2: To renew a 5-year teacher license(s), use a PI-1602-5R form and include the $100 fee. If you also apply for a reading teacher or administrative license for the first time (initial), also submit a PI-1602-AD form and include another $100 fee payment for it.

APPLICATION FEE DEFINED: The fee shown on each application form is an "application" fee, meaning that the fee covers the cost of processing/reviewing a license application. It is not a "license issuance" fee. Therefore no refunds are made if, after processing an application, it is determined that a license will not be issued.

PAYMENT OPTIONS: The Department Accepts the Following Methods of Fee Payment:

  • Credit Cards: The department accepts only MasterCard or Visa credit cards. We do not accept debit cards or other credit cards such as Discover or American Express. Be sure that your credit card account number and expiration date are correctly entered on Page 1 of the application. If you have entered the information by hand, blue or black ink must be used. To avoid significant processing delays, be sure that your application will be received by DPI well before the expiration date of your MasterCard or Visa card and that your credit limit will allow the amount charged for the application fee. Important:   The bank retains the fee payment page of the application, so be sure that your application is printed or copied on one-side only (not "back-to-back"). Otherwise the application materials forwarded to DPI Licensing staff by the bank will be missing a page.
  • Personal Checks or Money Order:   Make payable to the "Department of Public Instruction." For personal checks, be sure that the account drawn on will be open/active and contain sufficient funds at the time your application is received at DPI. A $20 fee is charged for personal checks returned for insufficient funds or drawn on a closed account. A cancelled check serves as your receipt that the application has been received.

MAILING INSTRUCTIONS: All application materials accompanied by a fee payment (including credit card authorization) must be mailed to the Milwaukee Bank address below.
