Wisconsin School Tobacco Grant ProgramThe Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has completed the renewal grant award process for the 2008-2009 school year. The school tobacco grant program appropriates funds totaling $355,000 from resources coordinated by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Division of Public Health, Tobacco Control Program. Twenty-four projects have been awarded tobacco grants to help enhance and maintain current tobacco control programs based on the CDC Guidelines for School Health Programs to Prevent Tobacco Use and Addiction. These funding priorities are part of a statewide effort to become more focused and strategic in reducing youth tobacco use. The department is placing a strong emphasis on the selections of research-based programs. Please note the major changes this year in the school tobacco grant competition. Identify the disparate youth population to be targeted for services with at least a portion of the grant funds, as well as a description of the activity targeting that population. For projects that do not propose tobacco cessation, there must be a description of the referral network available to students. Finally, there is an expectation to participate in a collaborative planning process with the locally funded tobacco coalition, or the unfunded public health agency charged with tobacco control responsibilities in your city or county. If you require further assistance or have questions, please contact the SSPW Team ATODA Consultants (listed below). Building Skills for Health Literacy on Tobacco ClassAlso information on Human Sexuality and NutritionDescription: The Building Skills for Health Literacy training explores strategies for teaching and assessing the skills of the health education standards. The primary focus will be on a unit of instruction on tobacco. Additionally, participants will explore nutrition and human sexuality. Skill-based instruction and assessment are critical to helping youth build the skills necessary to access accurate information, make informed decisions, communicate effectively and succeed in managing their own health. By shifting the emphasis from knowing health facts to developing health skills, teachers are provided a more complete and authentic picture of student achievement and allow the students to play an active role in their learning. Attendees will receive the Building Skills for Health Literacy: Tobacco and Human Sexuality Documents along with other additional materials. Health educators, ATODA coordinators, counselors, administrators, and anyone interested in health literacy are invited to attend one of the three opportunities:
Fee: $25-includes morning refreshments and lunch (no additional fee for the graduate credit).
