Extended Grade Band Standards
|
Extended Grade Band StandardsAll students, including students with significant cognitive disabilities, deserve and have a right to a quality educational experience. This right includes, to the maximum extent possible, the opportunity to be involved in and meet the same challenging expectations that have been established for all students. The State of Wisconsin has established Extended Grade Band Standards in Reading, Mathematics, and Science to guide instruction and curriculum planning for students with significant cognitive disabilities. The extended standards indicate what students with significant cognitive disabilities are expected to know and be able to do academically. The extended standards are used as the basis for the Wisconsin Alternate Assessment for Students with Disabilities (WAA-SwD). The extended standards were developed to satisfy the requirement of the U.S. Department of Education that Wisconsin have alternate achievement standards for its students with disabilities that are clearly linked to grade-level academic content standards. But they also give Wisconsin teachers the opportunity to provide high quality instruction in the academic content areas for all students, including those with significant cognitive disabilities. Brochure: Extended Grade Band Standards, Designing Instruction for Students with Significant Disabilities, A Brochure for Parents and Educators TrainingPresentation: This webcast has been designed to provide training on the Wisconsin Extended Grade Band Standards. The United States Department of Education (USDOE) requires students with significant cognitive disabilities to be assessed on alternate achievement standards. Teachers will need to provide instruction on these alternate standards prior to the administration of the WAA-SwD. This webcast will introduce teachers to the extended grade band standards and show how to incorporate them into daily classroom instruction. This webcast is also intended for educators that will be administrating and/or providing training for the WAA-SwD. Webcast - PowerPoint Training Activities

The instructional examples provide teachers with additional activities and ideas they can adapt for their use with students whose instruction is aligned with the Extended Grade Band Standards. ToolsBaseline Checklists - Student Baseline and Post-Instruction ChecklistsThe Baseline Checklists are tools teachers can use to determine which skills from the new Extended Grade Band Standards their students with significant cognitive disabilities can perform, and at which level of proficiency. These checklists are not a required form but were developed to help teachers plan their individual student's instruction. The checklists can also be used to assist IEP teams in deciding which set of academic standards (either the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards or the Extended Grade Band Standards) the student's instruction should be aligned with.
