Sent: Thursday, April 28, 2011 8:27 AM To – District Administrators and Open Enrollment Coordinators From – Mary Jo Cleaver, Open Enrollment Consultant Subject – Senate Bill 2 Senate Bill 2, which would extend the open enrollment application period and provide some specific exceptions to the open enrollment application period, was reported out of the Assembly Education Committee, which also adopted two amendments to the bill. -- The Assembly Education Committee amendment would provide that the parent and both the resident and nonresident school districts would all have to agree that it is the best interest of the child. SB 2, as passed by the Senate, would allow a parent to request an exception to the application period if the parent and the nonresident school districts all agree it is in the best interest of the child. --The Assembly Education Committee also changed, from March 15 to May 15, the by which school districts must notify of nonrenewal. The bill has been referred to the Assembly Rules Committee, which may schedule a vote in the Assembly. If passed by the Assembly, the amended bill would have to be approved by the Senate (in an up or down vote) and signed by the Governor in order to become law.
