2. New arts and creativity task forceA group that will make recommendations for enhancing arts and creativity in education held its first meeting on Wednesday, April 23. State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster plans to use the recommendations in structuring her budget priorities for 2009-11. Appointed by Burmaster and Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton, the Wisconsin Task Force on Arts and Creativity in Education will address the essential role of arts and creativity in education and in cultivating an innovative, entrepreneurial workforce. The group will focus on planning and making recommendations for various public agencies, organizations, and businesses to use in strengthening arts and creativity education in the state. The group is composed of 28 leaders from education, government, business, and citizen groups, in addition to Burmaster and Lawton, the co-chairs. The task force was announced in March at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, before an enthusiastic crowd of arts backers. Photographs of that occasion as well as the team's first meeting are available in the State Superintendent's Photo Gallery. "Advances in science, business, technology, and service industries come from those who think in new ways. Students who are involved in the arts have an opportunity to develop skills that are the foundation of creativity and innovation," Burmaster said. More information is available in a DPI news release. ![]()
