5. DPI consultant wins counseling leadership awardGary Spear, DPI Consultant for School Counseling Programs, has won the Mary Gerhke-McAllister Leadership Award from the Wisconsin School Counselors Association (WSCA). The association surprised Spear by presenting the award at the 2008 WSCA Conference in Stevens Point. Spear was selected by a panel of experts in school counseling and received the award with a standing ovation of hundreds of educators. Spear led more than 50 educators in a two-year process of developing the Wisconsin Comprehensive School Counseling Model book, including the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for School Counseling Programs, which clearly articulate the competencies students should develop through such programs. Spear has also provided leadership for professional development on the model, including more than 50 in-depth training events and numerous phone calls, on-site technical assistance, and other presentations. He has also laid the groundwork for training future trainers on the model, to expand state professional development capacity for years to come. ![]()
