5. Major education conferences, autism training, and more upcoming events

The calendar year is about to zoom forward to its conclusion, making now a good time to plan for exciting events in 2008.

January 15-16 brings the DPI's New Wisconsin Promise Conference, held in Madison, at which national and state education innovators, school leaders, and classroom teachers will share their knowledge and expertise about raising achievement for all students and closing the achievement gap. Presentations will cover the following subject areas: content and learning; district and school improvement; professional learning; and race, equity, and school culture. More information is available at http://www.dpi.wisconsin.gov/nwp/conference.html.

The 87th State Education Convention takes place in Milwaukee, January 23-25. This year's keynote speakers are Henry Winkler, best known for his role as "The Fonz" on the hit TV show, "Happy Days," who has long been an advocate for children and identifies with those with learning disabilities; and James Bradley, widely acclaimed author of "Flags of Our Fathers," who will talk to school leaders about what it takes to "do the impossible," using real-life examples of heroic accomplishments. The conference is organized by the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators, and the Wisconsin Association of School Business Officials. More information is available at http://www.wasb.org.

Educators can learn more about working with students with autism in K-12 settings at the Wisconsin Statewide Autism Training, organized by the DPI, which is held in Green Bay on January 30-31 and in Madison on April 8-9. More information is available at http://dpi.wi.gov/sped/doc/aut-trg-07-08-sch.doc.

All these events, and many more, can be found on the Wisconsin Education Calendar, http://dpi.wi.gov/calendar/calendar.aspx.
