3. Essay contests: United Nations, labor historyTwo essay contests for high school students have recently been announced. Each year since 1986, The United Nations Association of the USA holds its National High School Essay Contest on the United Nations, to inspire students to engage global issues and the work of the UN through scholarship and critical thinking. Three winners receive cash prizes and the first place winner is awarded a trip to the United Nations. For 2008, the theme asks students to tackle the challenge of combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. Students will write a letter of less than 1,500 words to the President of the United States answering the following questions: 1. Why is combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases so important?, and 2. What should the United States do to ensure that Millennium Development Goal Six will be reached by 2015? For more information, visit http://www.unausa.org/site/pp.asp?c=fvKRI8MPJpF&b=3376775# and click to access the "Web Portal."
