5. Children's Book Week occurs, moves to May

November 12-18, 2007, is Children's Book Week. But, while the occasion has traditionally been celebrated in November, the celebration will move to May beginning with next year's observance, May 12-18, 2008.

The Children's Book Council (CBC) made the decision because of long-standing complaints about the November dates. Teachers and librarians said they found the timing impossible due to Thanksgiving and other holiday interruptions.

According to Michelle F. Bayuk, marketing director of the CBC, there was no perfect alternative time. But the CBC hopes the early May dates may help link Children's Book Week to local summer reading programs, perhaps even making Children's Book Week the launch of summer reading.
