4. New or back-in-print publications

The DPI has recently released some new or back-in-print publications.

Wisconsin's Statewide System of Support takes another step forward with "Characteristics of Successful Districts," a publication offering rubrics to Wisconsin districts for building on their unique strengths and gaining a fuller understanding of their needs. These rubrics represent the cornerstone of the district self-assessment process and a framework for the type of continuous reflection that leads to collaboration and bolsters the stamina of educators. The booklet is available online at http://www.dpi.state.wi.us/ssos/csd.html. For a paper copy, contact Molly Garner, molly.garner@dpi.state.wi.us.

The Special Education Team has updated a handbook, "Opening Doors to Postsecondary Education and Training: Planning for Life After High School." This 26-page publication can help students, school counselors, teachers, parents, and others on a student's IEP team in planning for that student's postsecondary experience. It includes information to help students understand their strengths and identify the support and resources they will need to succeed at the postsecondary level. The handbook is available electronically at http://dpi.wi.gov/sped/pdf/tranopndrs.pdf.

The social studies publication, "Lessons in Labor History," is back in print. The book is a collection of study suggestions, background material, performance tasks, and lesson plans that help teachers incorporate the rich history of the American worker into what they already do in the classroom. Most students move from school to the work environment at some point in their lives, and this material aims to help them learn critical lessons about labor unions' contributions to society.
