2. American Education Week

State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster has issued a proclamation declaring November 11-17 as American Education Week in Wisconsin.

Burmaster said, "During American Education Week, I encourage all citizens to reflect on the importance of our public schools and the valuable contribution they make in sustaining our democracy and our American way of life."

American Education Week was launched in 1921 by the National Education Association and the American Legion. The two groups wanted to generate public support for education, as a response to the large number of World War I vets who were uneducated.

The theme for this year's observance is "Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility."
