6. District wins national award for serving homeless students

The Wisconsin Rapids School District and the district's homeless liaison, Carrie Siler, have won the 2007 National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) "Outstanding School-Based Education Program Providing Services to Students in Homeless Situations" award.

The district won for its Education for Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) program, which combines violence prevention, healthy relationship development, and poverty awareness.

Only one public school district across the United States wins this award each year, yet Wisconsin Rapids is the third Wisconsin district to win within the last four years. The Madison Metropolitan School District won in 2004, and the Kenosha School District in 2006.

Many other Wisconsin districts have outstanding programs for homeless students. Appleton, Eau Claire, Green Bay, Janesville, Middleton-Cross Plains, Milwaukee, Platteville, Racine, and Superior are among those contributing to outstanding leadership in providing services for families and youth experiencing homelessness.
