5. Education calendar highlights

September 19-21 brings the 2007 Fall Superintendents Conference, presented jointly by the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster. This event allows for an outstanding professional development opportunity for Wisconsin superintendents in subject areas such as state budget impacts on local education, teacher induction techniques, and media perceptions of education.

On Thursday, September 20, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster delivers her State of Education address at the Wisconsin Capitol. On this occasion she will also present Friend of Education awards to nine individuals and two organizations, for their significant contributions in the state, and will honor four Teachers of the Year for outstanding service to students in Wisconsin.

October 14-20 is Teen Read Week, a national literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association. This year's theme is "LOL @your library."

United Nations Day, October 24, commemorates the founding of the United Nations in 1945.
