5. CCSSO emphasizes innovation in 21st-century learning

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) held its summer meeting July 28-31. About 150 chief state school officers and others were in attendance.

Wisconsin State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster, who is CCSSO President this year, spoke to the group, emphasizing three major priorities that were explored during the meeting: showing high-profile leadership at the state and national levels, developing a broad national consensus and shared vision for the future of education, and getting down to the hard work of implementation—including content, assessment, and professional development. These priorities were developed during the conference sessions through a variety of invited speakers, panels, work sessions, and the informal networking conversations that took place throughout the meeting.
