Updated booklet explains special education in plain language

Parents who struggle to understand complex special education laws and policies have a newly updated free booklet at their disposal.

Special Education in Plain Language explains in everyday terms what the law requires and what school districts must do to implement the law. It also offers suggestions for parents on actively participating in their children's schooling. The updated booklet includes recent changes in state and federal law.

With a better understanding of these matters, parents and others can better participate in developing a child's individualized education program (IEP), a document that identifies goals for the student and the services needed to achieve them.

The booklet also includes a section on children with behavior difficulties and discipline, and a section on resolving disagreements between school personnel and parents.
