SunWise program

SunWise is an environmental and health education campaign that teaches children and adults to reduce the risk of skin cancer by protecting themselves from overexposure to the sun.

The Department of Public Instruction has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the UW Carbone Cancer Center to disseminate SunWise materials to every school district in the state.

Wisconsin is only the second state in the nation, after Arizona, to launch a statewide promotion of the SunWise program.

The campaign kicked off May 15 when State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster and other state and federal officials met with teacher Tracy Lipinski's third-grade class at Northside Elementary School in Sun Prairie to talk about safe outdoor activity, protection from ultraviolet radiation, and other issues, and to demonstrate the presence of ultraviolet radiation with frisbees that change color when exposed to UV rays.
