Burmaster participates in joint NGA, CCSSO, NASBE press conference on congressional NCLB reauthorization

In her role as president of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster joined Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri and Washington Governor Chris Gregoire of the National Governors Association (NGA), and Brad Bryant of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) for an April 5 press conference, to announce the organizations’ joint recommendations for reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) to congressional leadership.

“NCLB reauthorization must build upon the foundations and hard work accomplished over the past five years in schools across the country,” said Burmaster, CCSSO president and chair of the organization’s ESEA reauthorization task force. “Innovation and rigor must be the hallmark of the revised federal law so that states and their local school districts can further come together in raising student achievement and closing achievement gaps. Joining forces with the National Governors Association and the National Association of State Boards of Education, these three organizations call upon Congress to reauthorize ESEA so that the goals and intent of leaving no child behind can truly be realized.”
