Institute on Service-Learning and Citizenship scheduled

The State Superintendent’s Institute on Service-Learning and Citizenship will be held at the Madison Marriott West on February 22-23. The institute will feature tips and strategies for PK-16 educators to help their school and district meet the expectations of No Child Left Behind; Administrators looking for new ways to inspire staff and students to become active, engaged citizens; and community leaders looking for ways they can connect to the schools in meaningful ways. In addition, the institute will explore ways to create or participate in more service-learning opportunities at the university level.

The Institute will begin with a conference agenda overview on February 22 at 12:00 p.m. A pre-conference in-service session for Learn and Serve Grantees (Mandatory for all Learn and Serve Grantees) will be held at 3:00 p.m., with conference registration beginning at 3:30. The keynote speaker will be Darian Rodriguez Heyman, Executive Director of the Craigslist Foundation. The Governor’s Reception will begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by the banquet with Governor Jim Doyle, Wisconsin Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson, and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster.

Burmaster will welcome attendees to the institute on February 23. Workshops will include Disability Inclusion, The Community’s Perspective on Service-Learning, Service-Learning Basics, Best Practices in Intergenerational Programs, Working with People Impacted by Incarcerated Individuals, a presentation on The Corporation for National Service, and other critical subjects. The closing speaker will be Jody Kretzmann, co-director of The Asset-Based Community Development Institute, Northwestern University.
