Safe Schools Webcasts begin December 18

A series of monthly Best Practices Webcasts on crisis preparedness for Wisconsin schools will begin on December 18 from 11:15 a.m.-12 noon. The initial webcast is called Safe Schools: United We Stand, and will feature presentations by State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster; David Steingraber, Executive Director, Office of Justice Assistance; Peter Pochowski, Safety Director, Milwaukee Public Schools; and Doug Reynolds, Safety Director for the School District of Beloit.

Participants will learn how to form collaborative partnerships, and learn about current trends in school safety. Panelists will discuss a team approach to prevention, preparation, response and recovery that will promote student safety, higher academic achievement, and reassure parents. The Webcast also will include discussion on current trends in school violence – fact vs. fiction; low cost best practice ideas in maintaining a safe school environment; and the Four Pillars of School Safety: forming a strong link with 911 responders, staff education and training, the gift of intuition, and the power of student partnerships.

To join the live Webcast, log on at http://media2.wi.gov/dpi/viewer/ and click on Safe Schools: United We Stand. A recording of the webcast may also be viewed at anytime after December 18 at http://media2.wi.gov/dpi/viewer/. No pre-registration is needed.

This will be the first in a monthly series of Wisconsin School Crisis Preparedness Best Practices Webcasts sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance, the Department of Health and Family Services, Wisconsin Emergency Management, and the Center for School, Youth and Citizen Preparedness.
