New class joins Wisconsin Urban Leadership Schools ProjectThe second annual fall meeting for the Wisconsin Urban Leadership Schools Project, also known as the Wallace Fellows, met in Madison on October 11. Twenty-nine principals from the first group of Wallace Fellows, who are completing their first year in the program, joined the Wallace Coordinating Team and a new group of principals who make up the next class. The Wallace coordinating team is made up of liaisons from the Green Bay, Kenosha, Racine, Madison and Milwaukee school districts; the University of Wisconsin-Madison; University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Cardinal Stritch University; the Department of Public Instruction; the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators; the Milwaukee Partnership Academy; and the Governor’s office. State Superintendent Burmaster welcomed the Wallace Fellows and moderated a panel of district administrators exploring critical issues surrounding student achievement, school district administrative structure and cooperation with urban principals, and leadership philosophy. Participating in the panel discussion were District Administrators Dan Nerad, Green Bay; Scott Pierce, Kenosha; Art Rainwater, Madison; Tom Hicks, Racine; and Keith Posley and Anita Sparks representing William Andrekopoulos of Milwaukee. Beryl Levinger, a consultant working with a joint Wallace Foundation and Council of Chief State School Officers project focusing on leadership practices, also participated in the event. Funded by a three year grant from the Wallace Foundation, the Wisconsin Urban Schools Leadership Project enters its second year with 29 principals completing their first year of work, and 30 more principals beginning the program next semester. The Wallace Fellows are working toward Master Educator licensure and contributing to the development of a national leadership model. See a photo gallery of the event.
