Comics in the Classroom workshop set

A one-day workshop, Comics in the Classroom: Multiple Literacies through Graphic Novels, will be held July 21 at the Pyle Center on the UW-Madison campus.

A graphic novel is a book-length story told in sequences of pictures and text. Workshop organizers say, “Think comic book, but don't dismiss them as kids' stuff. Comics and graphic novels aren't just about superheroes, and with sophisticated themes, topics, and content, they aren't just for kids.” Teachers can capitalize on a type of reading that many middle and high school students are already tuned into when they add graphic novels to their repertoire for classroom teaching.

Learn about the graphic novel format and examine the rich possibilities for classroom use in many areas of the curriculum in this one-day workshop for middle and high school teachers. The workshop will be led by librarian Hollis Rudiger of the Cooperative Children's Book Center, School of Education, UW-Madison, and is being offered through the UW-Madison Office of Education Outreach.

The workshop can be taken for .5 CEUs or for 1 UW-Madison credit (special student enrollment/university tuition fee required). For more information, including how to register, go to http://www.education.wisc.edu/outreach/workshops/?idMainType=4#WS57 or contact Karin Silet in the Office of Education Outreach.
