UW-Milwaukee conference focuses on achievement

The second annual Summer Institute, Moving Beyond the Achievement Gaps: Strategies that Work, sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Education Outreach, will be held June 19-20 at the Four Points by Sheraton Milwaukee Airport. Educators, school administrators and community leaders will learn strategies to close achievement gaps, strengthen professional knowledge, and enhance skills to deal with PI 34 and ESEA legislation.

Keynote speakers will be Alfie Kohn, author of ten books on education, parenting and human behavior; Larry Brendtro, founder of Reclaiming Youth International and Dean of Research at Starr Commonwealth; and Sonia Nieto, professor Emerita of Language, Literacy and Culture at the School of Education, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The registration fee is $100 before May 26 and $150 after, with a registration deadline of June 10.

An option to earn one UWM credit is offered for attendance at the Summer Institute. Online instruction will be required in addition to attending both days of the Summer Institute. For more information, visit the UWM School of Education Outreach Web site at www.edoutreach.soe.uwm.edu.
