Elizabeth Burmaster |
1. On the roadOn Monday, April 21, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster welcomed participants to the Wisconsin Charter School Conference. She urged participants on with their good work and gave an overview of some Wisconsin charter schools that have used innovative practices to close the achievement gap and serve students at risk. That afternoon, Burmaster participated in a meeting of the Accountability and Support Group, a project of the Greater Milwaukee Committee, which is working to improve student achievement in Milwaukee Public Schools. On Wednesday, April 23, State Superintendent Burmaster, with Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton, convened the first meeting of the Wisconsin Task Force on Arts and Creativity in Education (see article #2). The members briefly introduced themselves, then the group got down to the business of creating a plan of action. On Thursday, April 24, Burmaster participated in a meeting of the Alliance for Attendance, a group which is improving student attendance in a number of school districts. At this meeting, members learned strategies from representatives of Wisconsin school districts which have implemented successful projects to increase attendance, including Beloit, Green Bay, Janesville, Kenosha, Madison, Menominee Indian, Milwaukee, and Racine. ![]()
