On Tuesday, April 1, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster participated in a telephone meeting of the board of the Council of Chief State School Officers, the national association for which Burmaster serves as Immediate Past President. Among the agenda items was update on ESEA (No Child Left Behind) Reauthorization.

Burmaster participated in meetings of the Wisconsin Technical College System Board.

On Friday, April 4, State Superintendent Burmaster convened a meeting of her Statewide International Education Council. One discussion topic was how best to utilize DPI partnerships with educational institutions in other countries such as France, Germany, Japan, and Thailand, to directly benefit student achievement in global literacy.

On Sunday, April 6, Burmaster welcomed the Education Commission of the States (ECS), a national education policy organization that held its Spring Steering Committee Meeting in Madison this year. Topics included international benchmarking, standards setting, and global competitiveness. STEM education was also discussed in a keynote by Dr. Joyce Winterton of NASA.

Also on the state superintendent's schedule this week were memorial services and visitation for Milton McPike, former principal of Madison East High School. Burmaster called McPike a "giant of a man" and said in a recent statement that "through his personal example, thousands of students learned to overcome their fears around race, class, gender, and disability by having an open heart and loving soul."
