1. On the road

On Monday and Tuesday, March 10-11, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster led Wisconsin's six-member delegation for the National Endowment for the Arts Education Leaders Institute in Wheaton, Illinois. Members of the Wisconsin delegation joining Burmaster were Barry Applewhite, Milwaukee Public Schools; Ted Hamm, Sheboygan Area School District; Susan Lipp, Full Compass (Middleton); Gerard McKenna, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point; and George Tzougros, Wisconsin Arts Board.

On Wednesday, March 12, Burmaster chaired a meeting of the PK-16 Leadership Council, a group of educational leaders committed to addressing critical state education issues through collaborative initiatives. Department of Workforce Development Secretary Roberta Gassman, Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities President Rolf Wegenke, and University of Wisconsin System President Kevin Reilly made presentations on initiatives to smooth the transition from high school to work and postsecondary education. The Department of Public Instruction highlighted its work through the American Diploma Project & Partnership for 21st Century Skills.

On Thursday, March 13, State Superintendent Burmaster participated in an interview about Wisconsin student athletics on site at the WIAA state girls basketball tournament in Madison.
