1. On the road

On Monday, March 3, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster was interviewed by University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Professor Sandra Stokes, editor of the Wisconsin State Reading Association Journal. The interview was for an article on Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) work related to the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act. Burmaster is immediate past president of the CCSSO.

On Tuesday, March 4, Burmaster was the featured speaker for the annual Women's History Month observance at Fort McCoy. The audience was made up of civilians who work for the military and U.S. Department of Defense at Fort McCoy.

On Wednesday, March 5, State Superintendent Burmaster presented the Rabin Youth Arts Awards, sponsored by the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras. The awards honor artistic and philanthropic work in support of youth artists and are named for Dr. Marvin Rabin, founder of the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras and youth orchestras in Boston and Kentucky.

Later that morning, Burmaster addressed a public forum on arts education, where she asked attendees to express their ideas about arts education to Wisconsin's delegates to the first Education Leaders Institute on Arts Education, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), which will be held in Wheaton, Illinois, March 11-13. The public forum was part of the RSVP for Arts Day sponsored by Arts Wisconsin.

That afternoon, State Superintendent Burmaster delivered the welcome address to the annual Preserving Early Childhood Conference, coordinated by Cooperative Educational Service Agency (CESA) 2. The conference drew school district administrators, childcare and Head Start directors, and other state agency and association representatives who work on behalf of early childhood education. Burmaster told participants that "the early childhood world is alive with transformation. Relationships, structures, and communications are undergoing profound and positive changes because of your efforts. "

On Thursday, March 6, Burmaster participated in a meeting of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents.

On Friday, March 7, State Superintendent Burmaster addressed her Rural Advisory Council and presented awards in the State Capitol to rural schools, libraries, and communities that have pursued programs and activities to keep rural traditions strong in Wisconsin.
