On Monday, February 18, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster presented to the Rotary Club of Oconomowoc a statewide perspective on education and opportunities for business community involvement.

On Wednesday, February 20, Burmaster was in Brookfield to convene the State Superintendent and Wisconsin Campus Compact's PK-16 Institute on Service-Learning and Citizenship, and to present her annual Service-Learning Awards (see article #3). In her opening remarks, Burmaster noted the power of service-learning to help students apply their knowledge to the real world and to engage civically. "The experiences of service-learning will help our students contribute more to the good of all," she said.

Also that day, State Superintendent Burmaster traveled to Sussex to visit Templeton Middle School in the Hamilton School District. Templeton teachers were instrumental in the development of the Department of Public Instruction Bullying Prevention Curriculum. Burmaster toured the school, visited a Project Lead the Way pre-engineering class, and had the unexpected opportunity to observe the school's highly efficient response to a small electrical fire in a mechanical room.

On Thursday, February 21, Burmaster participated in a joint meeting of Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and the Greater Milwaukee Committee Accountability and Support Group, a coalition working with MPS to improve student achievement.
