1. On the roadOn Monday, February 4, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster participated in a press conference announcing the recent formation of the Accountability and Support Group (ASG) of the Greater Milwaukee Committee. The ASG will assist and provide accountability for the efforts of Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) to improve student academic achievement. Also involved in the ASG and in Monday's event are Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett; MPS Superintendent William Andrekopoulos; Manpower CEO Jeff Joerres; Sister Joel Read of the School Sisters of St. Francis and retired president of Alverno College; Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Carl Ashley; Tony Baez, president/CEO of the Council for the Spanish Speaking; Cecelia Gore, program manager for the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation; Beverly Greenberg, vice president of public affairs for Time Warner Cable of Southeast Wisconsin; the Rev. Louis Sibley III, chairman of MICAH, a community organization; Paul Roller, retired chairman of Miller Brands in Milwaukee; state Rep. Pedro Colón; state Sen. Lena Taylor; and representatives of the education schools at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Marquette University, and Cardinal Stritch University. That evening, Burmaster and First Lady Jessica Doyle held a recognition ceremony at the Wisconsin Executive Residence to honor the 2007 recipient of the Milken Educator Award, Megan Dixon from Greenfield Middle School, as well as Milken Educators from previous years. On Thursday, February 7, the state superintendent addressed the Wisconsin State Reading Association 2008 Convention in Milwaukee. Burmaster participated in a meeting of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents on Friday, February 8. ![]()
