1. On the road

On Monday, January 21, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster participated in the state of Wisconsin annual Tribute and Ceremony honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Speakers and performers at the event included Governor Jim Doyle, University of Wisconsin-Extension Chancellor David Wilson, national education writer Gloria Ladson-Billings, a host of Wisconsin cultural and creative figures, and the Sun Prairie High School Jazz Ensemble.

On Tuesday, January 22, Burmaster addressed library backers during Library Legislative Day in Madison. Also speaking were Senator Russ Decker and Representative Kitty Rhoades of the Wisconsin Legislature. State Senator Luther Olsen and state Representative Mark Pocan received awards during the program for their support of Wisconsin libraries.

Later that day, the state superintendent addressed the Rotary Club of Appleton, providing a statewide perspective on education and addressing accomplishments and challenges in Appleton in particular and Wisconsin in general.

On Wednesday, January 23, and Thursday, January 24, Burmaster addressed the State Education Convention in Milwaukee. The convention is jointly sponsored by the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB), the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators (WASDA), and the Wisconsin Association of School Business Officials (WASBO). This year's theme was "Advocating for Public Education."

While in Milwaukee, Burmaster presented the WASDA Superintendent of the Year award to Jim Rickabaugh of Whitefish Bay School District.

On the evening of the 23rd, the state superintendent attended Governor Jim Doyle's State of the State Address. Burmaster's statement on the governor's address is available online.

On Friday, January 25, the state superintendent addressed district board members and college presidents of the Wisconsin Technical College System. She provided updates on Department of Public Instruction (DPI) initiatives to enhance education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), to smooth transitions between high school and postsecondary education, and to prepare students in other ways for life in the 21st century.
