Elizabeth Burmaster |
1. On the roadOn the morning of Monday, October 15, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster welcomed a meeting of the Professional Standards Council of Teachers (PSCT). The PSCT is a group of educators who assist the State Superintendent in improving teacher preparation, licensure, and regulation, notably through helping to refine the implementation of the Quality Educator Initiative. Later that day, Burmaster participated in a meeting of Wisconsin Women Forward for Environmental Education, a group of women of influence who have interest in environmental education and are committed to preserving the environmental education tradition in Wisconsin. On Tuesday, October 16, the state superintendent delivered the keynote address at the Wisconsin School Breakfast Conference in Oconomowoc. During her speech, Burmaster revealed data which shows Wisconsin is seeing unprecedented growth in school breakfast programs (see article #2). Later that morning, Burmaster visited Greenfield Middle School for a surprise award ceremony: Greenfield Reading Specialist Megan Dixon won the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award. Dixon will receive $25,000. She was selected without her knowledge by a blue-ribbon panel facilitated by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. More information, and photos, are linked from the DPI's news release menu page at http://dpi.wi.gov/eis/prmenu.html. That evening, the state superintendent addressed the Milwaukee Board of School Directors to outline expectations for district and school improvement in Milwaukee, as required by the federal No Child Left Behind law. On Friday, October 19, the state superintendent addressed a reception honoring past Wisconsin State Superintendent Barbara Thompson and her late husband Glenn, on the establishment of the Barbara S. and Glenn T. Thompson Graduate Award Fund. The fund will support students in the University of Wisconsin–Madison Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. ![]()
