On Wednesday, September 5, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster spoke to the Downtown Rotary Club of Racine. She described the Department of Public Instruction's work to bring educators and business leaders together to improve education, and she communicated the urgent challenges facing school districts in Wisconsin.

Later that day, Burmaster placed personal phone calls to the four educators who have been named Teachers of the Year for 2007-08. Honors are awarded for Elementary, Middle, High School, and Special Services Teacher of the Year. For more information, including the teachers' names, see article #2 of this issue.

On Thursday and Friday, September 6-7, the state superintendent participated in a meeting of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents.
