1. On the road
On Monday August 20, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster convened educators and professionals who are creating Wisconsin’s International Education Strategic Plan 2008. Burmaster charged the group with developing a plan to 1) effectively communicate to Wisconsin citizens the importance of international education in the 21st century, 2) infuse international concepts and themes into all content areas, 3) use technology in international education, and 4) help more students study abroad. Participants in the process were selected from nominations from each of the five regional alliances of the Statewide International Education Council. Also in attendance was Betsy Devlin-Foltz of the Longview Foundation, which has provided a grant to support Wisconsin's strategic planning in international education.
On August 21, Burmaster participated in a meeting of the principal players of the PK-16 Leadership Council. The PK-16 Leadership Council is a collaborative group focused on enhancing education for Wisconsin's students from pre-kindergarten through post-secondary education. The other principals in attendance were President Dan Clancy of the Wisconsin Technical College System, President Kevin Reilly of the University of Wisconsin System, and President Rolf Wegenke of the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.
On August 22, the State Superintendent was in Menomonee Falls to deliver a keynote for teachers and staff at their back-to-school event. She congratulated them for recent successes in the district and for their efforts in raising student achievement and working to close the achievement gap.
