On the Road

On Tuesday, February 20 State Superintendent Burmaster joined First Lady Jessica Doyle and Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz to kick off the fundraising campaign for the Lussier Community Education Center. The center, to be built adjacent to Jefferson Middle School in Madison, will be a gathering place of community members of all ages. The center will be named for John H. Lussier, who is the primary donor to the project.

On February 22, Burmaster attended the Governor’s Service Recognition Banquet where she served as the event’s emcee. She also presented the Learn and Serve Governor’s Community Service Award. Over 400 teachers, students, higher education faculty and students, AmeriCorps and VISTA members, administrators, policy makers, community leaders attended the event.

Service-learning is a method of teaching and learning that combines academic work with service to the community. Students learn by doing through a clear application of skills and knowledge while helping meet needs in the school or greater community.
