On the RoadOn January 15, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster participated in the State of Wisconsin's 27th Annual tribute and ceremony honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the State Capitol. Governor Jim Doyle presented the official Wisconsin State Proclamation honoring Dr. King. The music program included the Highway to Heaven Big Band, Milwaukee's All Saints Gospel Choir, and the African artist Yawo. On January 16, Burmaster participated in the board meeting of the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators (WASDA) in Milwaukee. The 86th State Education Convention, including meetings of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB), the Wisconsin Association of School Business Officials (WASBO), and WASDA, was held in Milwaukee on January 17-18. On January 17, Burmaster presented awards recognizing outstanding achievement in service to Wisconsin students, schools, and communities to eight educators at the State Education Convention awards ceremony. The state superintendent was a guest at the WASDA noon luncheon on January 18, and presented a plaque to Nancy Hendrickson, Superintendent of the Pecatonica Area Schools, honoring her as Wisconsin’s 2007 Superintendent of the Year. Later that day, Burmaster joined a group of West Side Academy elementary students for the Share the Dream Celebration at Milwaukee’s Washington Park Library. Burmaster talked about highlights of Dr. King’s life, the importance of his work, and the value he placed on education. She read to the children from a book about Dr. King.
