On October 2, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster traveled to Kenosha and Janesville to announce continuous school improvement grants for the Racine, Kenosha, Beloit, Stoughton, and Janesville school districts. These school improvement grants, funded through the federal Title I program, provide funding to school districts for activities including tutoring, expanding summer school programming, staff development, instructional materials, early intervention programs, and strengthening student reading and math skills.

On October 3, Burmaster held Higher Education Day activities in Wausau (see separate story in this issue).

State Superintendent Burmaster and Governor and Mrs. Doyle attended funeral services for Weston School Principal John Klang on October 4.

That afternoon, Burmaster attended the Aristos Scholars Academy retreat in Merrimac. The Aristos Scholars are a group of 22 outstanding teachers and administrators from the Madison Metropolitan School District who are focusing on programs and models to improve student achievement and engagement. The state superintendent was invited to share information on specific Wisconsin public school programs or models that have established successful programs to increase student achievement or engagement.

On October 5-6, the state superintendent attended the monthly meeting of the UW Regents in Platteville. Burmaster is a member of the Regents Executive Committee and the Business, Finance, and Audit Committee.
