Elizabeth Burmaster |
On the RoadOn March 29, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster, a member of the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) Board of Directors, attended a board meeting in La Crosse. President Lee Rasch of Western Wisconsin Technical College (WWTC) reported on their efforts with continuous quality improvement. WWTC was the first college to be recognized by the Wisconsin Forward Award at the mastery level, and is a three-time Forward Award recipient. The board also heard presentations from WTCS Board President Brent Smith; WTCS President Dan Clancy; and Technical College Board Association Executive Director Paul Gabriel. The state superintendent attended a Women's History Month Reception at the Executive Residence, hosted by First Lady Jessica Doyle, on March 30. The event celebrated the publication of A Mind of Her Own: Helen Connor Laird and Family, 1888-1982, a book by Helen C. Laird, published by the University of Wisconsin Press. On April 2, Burmaster welcomed teacher fellows, scholarship winners, and their families to a Herb Kohl Educational Foundation luncheon and reception at Monona Grove High School. The event honored 2006 recipients of Kohl Foundation awards and featured formal presentations of Kohl Fellowship awards to CESA 2 teachers and their schools, and Kohl Excellence and Initiative scholarships to area graduating high school seniors. Teachers winning Kohl Fellowship awards are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, their ability to motivate, and for their leadership and service within and outside the classroom. Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of academic excellence and achievement, leadership outside the academic setting, and strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond. A series of Kohl awards programs are being held around the state to recognize some of Wisconsin’s finest students and teachers for their dedication and diligence.
