1. On the roadOn Wednesday, April 30, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster visited Lake Holcombe School, meeting with students and educators and delivering a congratulatory address to students and educators as part of a celebration of the district's being recognized as a Bronze Medal School by U.S. News and World Report. That evening, Burmaster addressed the CESA 12 Board and Administrator Conference in Cable. Burmaster updated the participants on education budget news, and on work to ensure that Wisconsin students graduate with the skills and experience necessary to succeed in careers and postsecondary learning in the 21st century. Traveling from Cable to Bayfield on Thursday, May 1, State Superintendent Burmaster visited the Bayfield School District, reading to elementary students and addressing the district's sesquicentennial celebration. On Saturday, May 3, at the WEAC Awards and Recognition Banquet, Burmaster recognized the Wisconsin 2007-08 Teachers of the Year and joined with President Mary Bell and WEAC members in honoring other educators and education partners. On Sunday, May 4, State Superintendent Burmaster addressed the 2008 Wisconsin All-State Scholars at their awards banquet, and presented each with their award. The All-State Scholars program was founded in 1986 by Robert Spiegel, then editor of the Wisconsin State Journal, and was one of the first programs in the nation to recognize students for dedication to their academic studies. Also speaking was Harold Scheub, Professor of African Languages and Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. ![]()
