Elizabeth Burmaster |
1. On the RoadOn Monday, June 15, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster accompanied Governor Jim Doyle and First Lady Jessica Doyle in participating in the 2009 Governors Education Symposium in Cary, North Carolina. The symposium was co-hosted by the Hunt Institute and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, and focused on the education priorities outlined in the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA). As part of the proceedings, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan met with the governors and state superintendents. On Tuesday, June 16, Burmaster attended First Lady Jessica Doyle's Wisconsin Executive Residence celebration and recognition event for the Launchpad program of the Wisconsin School Music Association. Launchpad recognizes and rewards high school student "garage bands" and other groups formed outside of music classroom ensembles, and the music teachers who influenced them. Burmaster and Doyle serve on the Crescendo Council, an honorary board which supports Launchpad. On Wednesday, June 17, Burmaster chaired a meeting of the Statewide International Education Council, which she formed in 2003. In her last meeting with the board, Burmaster reflected with the Council on past accomplishments and future challenges. On Thursday, June 18, Burmaster addressed a meeting of the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Board of Directors with Jackie Patterson, DPI Director of Districts Identified for Improvement. The MPS Corrective Action Plan which is required under the federal No Child Left Behind law was the focus of the meeting.
