1. On the road

On Thursday, June 5 and Friday, June 6, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster participated in a meeting of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents.

On Monday, June 9, State Superintendent Burmaster was in Milwaukee for a Community Listening Session on the Milwaukee Public Schools District Identified for Improvement Plan which has been created under the requirements of No Child Left Behind.

On Tuesday, June 10, Burmaster hosted a meeting about leadership development for Wisconsin schools with leaders at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Later that day, she met with her Collaborative Council, a group of education leaders from across Wisconsin who work to improve education in the state.

From Tuesday, June 10, through Wednesday, June 11, State Superintendent Burmaster addressed and participated in Institute.21, the annual Best Practices Forum of the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, which is the leading national organization advocating for the inclusion of 21st century skills in education. Representatives of businesses, education organizations, and the nine states involved in the group attended the event, which included a showcase of some notable Wisconsin projects teaching 21st century skills. At the event, Burmaster was presented with recommendations for revising the state's mathematics and English language arts standards to align them with workforce and postsecondary expectations (see article #2). This effort received a 21st Century Skills Practice of the Year Award.
