BULLETIN BOARDA Newsletter of the Wisconsin Regional Library for the Blind & Physically Handicapped Wells Street Entrance Under Renovation Beginning March 3, 2003, the Milwaukee Public Library, which houses the Wisconsin Regional Library, planned remodeling of the entrance on Wells Street will begin. All visitors to the Wisconsin Regional Library will need to enter on 8th Street, proceeding along the corridor past the elevator to the double wooden doors on the right. Visitors will turn right through those doors, and walk under the building to reach the Regional Library. A telephone will be located next to the elevator for visitors needing help. For those visitors who need to be picked up afterwards, a chair will be placed inside the 8th Street entrance. Construction should be completed August 31, 2003, when a new accessible entrance and elevator will be unveiled. Announcements: If you encounter a damaged cassette in book you borrow from the Regional Library, please wrap a rubber band around that cassette only, and place it in its green mailing container upside down. You also may place a checkmark in the little box on the return mailing label, and briefly write what is wrong on the label beside it. Do NOT put a note inside the container, or tie anything outside the container. Thank you. Resources: The Turner Network publishes a monthly schedule of audio described television shows and movies that it broadcasts. Time Warner Audio Books, a division of A O L Time Warner Book Group, AFB Talking Books, a department of the American Foundation for the Blind, and Dolphin Computer Access partner to produce the first commercially available audio e book. Best selling author James Patterson will release his new novel, The Jester, as an audio e book in conjunction with its standard print, audio and e book releases. This new technology offers many features that allow people to enjoy books in a unique and exciting way. Readers can display the text of the book on the computer screen, fully synchronized with the audio of a professional narrator, or they can switch back and forth between the text and the audio. The ability to, toggle, between print and audio versions of the same work increases the functionality and accessibility to consumers. Text may be accessed via audio, on screen in large print, or in braille. This audio e book will be available on an additional CD included in the unabridged CD audiobook version of The Jester, available from Time Warner Audio Books in March of 2003. Tape Ministries NW has more than 900 Christian orientated books and other reading materials on cassette to lend to the blind and visually impaired. All of the Library lending is done by mail, free of charge. However, if you are a user of assistive technology, navigating your way along the information highway can seem impossible. Without a basic understanding of how the Internet works, it is easy to quickly become overwhelmed. The Hadley School for the Blind new online course, Internet Basics, can help you be a part of the worldwide community of Internet users. This tuition free course explains several aspects of the Internet. Email features are explained, as are mailing lists and newsgroups. Directions for using the World Wide Web are provided. User tips about browsers, mail, and news readers are included, as well as guides to search tools and mailing-list search sites. To enroll, just call, 800-526-9909.
