Requests for Standards

Patrons may request a variety of standards through interlibrary loan. Titles are occasionally found on WISCAT or OCLC and may be requested through normal interlibrary loan channels if they are not marked "reference." However, many standards are not on WISCAT or OCLC and most standards are non-circulating. As a result, it is very important to obtain sufficient information from the patron so other formats can be requested if available.

A helpful tool for library staff is a brochure produced by Milwaukee Public Library entitled, "Standards: Resources at Your Milwaukee Public Library."

When requesting standards, it is important to include as much of the following data as possible:

  • Issuing agency name or acronym (ANSI, ASME, ASTM, IEEE, ISO, BSI, etc.)
  • Designated number of the standard needed
  • Examples of Agency name/Designated numbers:
    • ANSI B175.1-1991
    • ANSI/SAE AMS 2750C
    • ASTM D3231-89
  • Year of standard, or indicate whether patron would like "latest" etc.
  • Title of the standard and subsection (if known). This will alert staff to cases where the standard number may be incorrect.
  • Subject covered by standard.
  • If possible, the patron's name and daytime phone number.
  • As verification, list the source where the patron found the standard cited. It is always helpful to have a copy of the patron's citation available.

If the standard needed is not available through interlibrary loan channels, the patron may choose to purchase it from the issuing agency or from the following company:
