Interlibrary Loan Services

Reference and Loan Library staff lends materials from its collection in response to requests for specific titles. When materials are not available at the Reference and Loan Library, staff may refers requests to other libraries. Potential lending libraries which own the titles are identified using a wide variety of local, state, national and international database resources. If materials are not owned by Wisconsin libraries, requests are sent to out-of-state libraries that do not charge fees for service or that have reciprocal lending agreements with the Reference and Loan Library.

Reference and Loan Library staff manages and coordinates interlibrary loan services with public library systems, other state level service providers, and local libraries. Staff holds planning meetings, develops procedures and protocols, disseminates information, and provides consultation about interlibrary loan issues, problems, and procedures.

Staff also manages electronic interlibrary loan systems which are used by many Wisconsin libraries. Library staff at all types and sizes of libraries may create requests using automated systems and send them to other libraries, the system clearinghouse, the Reference and Loan Library, and other state level resource libraries. Reference and Loan Library staff manages a state contract for an advanced electronic interlibrary loan system which tracks interlibrary loan requests and automates many interlibrary loan functions.
