Blue Ribbon Schools Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do Wisconsin schools qualify to become a Blue Ribbon School?
Schools are nominated by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction based on multiple criteria, including percent of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, demonstrating dramatic improvement, being "high performing," and making Adequate Yearly Progress. Additional criteria are further specified on the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools website at: http://www.ed.gov/programs/nclbbrs/faq.html.
How many Wisconsin schools can receive the award each year?
In most years, Wisconsin has been eligible to nominate up to eight schools. At least one third of the nominated schools must have at least 40% of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
What is the timeline for applications?
Eligible schools are nominated by the State Superintendent in the fall and submit applications to the U.S. Department of Education in mid-February.
