Teaching Character Education Using Children's Literature

No. 2029, 2001, 72 pp., $18

Helping children develop to their full potential as citizens is an important priority of families, schools, and communities. There is a common ground of what we as a society want our children to know and be able to do - a common ground that defines citizens as productive, responsible, caring, and contributing individuals.

What resources are available to help parents, educators, librarians, and others "steer" our children and young adults in the right direction?

Teaching Character Education Using Children's Literature is an annotated bibliography of books that help convey and reinforce the elements that make up the seven characteristics of successful schools: (1) core values, (2) safe and orderly places, (3) family and community involvement, (4) address societal issues, (5) positive relationships, (6) engage students' minds, and (7) high expectations. Selections for each characteristic are targeted to grades PreK-3, 4-6, and 7-12.
