math curriculum guide cover pixPlanning Curriculum in Mathematics

No. 2008, 2001, 514 pp., $45

Planning Curriculum in Mathematics is the next step in the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction's (DPI) commitment to help school districts enhance their mathematics programs. This all-new guide will assist mathematics educators as they seek to reap promising results, to become familiar with current needs for mathematical understanding, and to contemplate any improvements that might need to be made in their programs.

Planning Curriculum in Mathematics contains a plethora of resources that serve as a ready reference. It reflects the underlying belief that mathematics must be taught and learned with understanding. Wisconsin has a tradition of outstanding mathematics achievement. Consistent with that tradition, the Badger State wants to develop students who are: prepared to address the mathematics they will need as 21st century citizens; confident in their abilities to tackle mathematical challenges; motivated to continue to pursue mathematical endeavors; and excited about lifelong learning and the application of mathematics.

In producing the Planning Curriculum in Mathematics, Wisconsin has built on its highly acclaimed documents and on national efforts. This new guide complements Wisconsin's Model Academic Standards for Mathematics which set forth what mathematics students should know and be able to do at the end of grades four, eight, and 12.

The model academic standards in mathematics reflect a shift necessitated by technological changes. They also recognize research regarding mathematics teaching and learning. It is imperative that all students possess math skills, can use math procedures, and problem solve. The standards provide guidance to schools as curricular decisions are made locally.
